John Arrowood, 79, dies

Dayton, OH–John F. Arrowood, 79, of Dayton, OH passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after an extended illness on Dec. 1, 2021 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born on July 29, 1942 in Jackson, KY, the son of the late John and Ester (Spicer) Arrowood.

Until his retirement in 2013, he was the owner and operator of Arrowood Upholstery in Dayton. In 1976, John purchased his first Standardbred race horse, “Maid of The Mist,” that started a career as a well-known breeder and trainer for Standardbred sulky race horses.

Mr. Arrowood is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Lou; son, Eric (wife Heather) Arrowood; daughter, Denise (husband Donald) Preston; 4 grandchildren, Kyle, Isaac, Blake Arrowood, and Jeffery Elam, Jr.; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Stanley Arrowood; sister, America Arrowood; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends..

Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John F. Arrowood; grandson, Donald Preston; sisters, Naomi Davis, Jewel North, Opal Mcintosh, Rosie Jiles and Bonnie Mae Turner; and brother, Alva Arrowood.

A gathering of family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Valley Worship Center, 2360 Valley Street, Dayton, OH 45404. A Celebration of Life ceremony remembering Mr. Arrowood’s life will immediately follow the gathering at 12 noon with Pastor Woodie Fultz officiating.
