Lee, Zuccarello win NAADA splits at Yonkers

Yonkers, NY — Joe Lee and Matt Zuccarello won their respective $10,000 divisions of the North American Amateur Drivers Association Fall Series on Thursday (Aug. 18) at Yonkers Raceway.

Lee, driving Natural Kemp in the first division, overcame post eight with a sustained bid from off the pace, winning by a neck in 1:58.4. The pair ducked to the pylons early and were six lengths behind pacesetter Jekyll N Hyde (Nicole DiCostanzo) after a :29 first quarter. Jekyll N Hyde maintained the lead by the half in :58.1 and three-quarters in 1:28.1; meanwhile, Lee and Natural Kemp gradually moved forward to be fifth at three-quarters and fourth at the top of the lane. In the stretch, Natural Kemp surged to the lead, battling a hard-charging Fiji (Dave Offenberg) to win by a neck in 1:58.4. Jekyll N Hyde was a beaten third.

In the second split, Bob Krivelin sent Bully Boy to the lead from the eight-hole to command a :28.1 first panel and subsequently rate a :58.3 half. At that point, Matt Zuccarello moved Judge Ken off the pylons from third, and they worked into second by three-quarters in 1:28.1. Bully Boy braced for Judge Ken’s challenge through the far turn, but Judge Ken proved stronger and won by a neck in 1:59.1. Wings Up (Joe Faraldo) charged down the lane for second; Bully Boy finished third.

Judge Ken, a new edition to trainer Dennis Laterza’s barn, is owned by Winners Circle Racing and John Campagnuolo.
