by Michael M. Sweeney, for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, ME — The 2-year-old stakes season in Maine will reach its annual climax on Sunday (September 9) as Scarborough Downs proudly plays host to the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes finals.

This year’s finals — open to the top freshman point earners — will be contested for purses totaling close to $200,000.

To help kick of the festivities of stakes finals week, Scarborough Downs — in a cooperative effort — will conduct the post position draw for the finals in the sales ring of the Maine Standardbred Breeders annual yearling sale at 11:30 a.m. (EDT) on Wednesday, September 5.

This unique duel event will take place at the Cumberland Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maine, with the first horse entering the ring immediately following the draw.

The draw will be conducted by Scarborough’s presiding judge, Edward Kelleher, with the assistance of Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association president Diann Perkins.

Horsemen are reminded to enter their horses at the Race Office at Scarborough Downs on Wednesday in the normal manner. The entry box closes at 9:00 a.m.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness action throughout the fall every Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday with first post scheduled for 12:05 p.m. (EDT) with the sole exception of Saturday, September 8, when the call to post will be sounded at 3:45 p.m.
