Maine Fair season begins

Augusta, ME — The official start to Fair Season in Maine was kicked off by the Northern Maine Fair in Presque Isle, where six pari-mutuel race days were showcased between July 24 and July 31, including many divisions of the popular Maine Sire Stakes program.

Henry Jackson received his recognition from officers of the Northern Maine Fair.

Top awards were presented to the week’s leading trainer, Philip “Bo” Sowers and driver, Kevin Switzer Jr. A special presentation was made in the winner’s circle by the officers of Northern Maine Fair to the retiring Executive Director of the Maine State Harness Racing Commission, Henry Jackson, as July 31 was his last official day of business.

The next stop on the fair circuit was in Topsham where pari-mutuel action was back in the oval with no admittance fee to the fans of the Topsham Fair on Sunday (Aug. 2). Veteran horseman Gary Mosher was in the hunt for just three wins to bring his career total to an impressive 6,000. He was unable to put together that string of wins on Sunday as there was one driver who dominated the day. Drew Campbell put on a driving clinic for the up and comers and added six wins to his lifetime tally.

The Topsham Fair will have additional race dates on Aug. 3, 4, 5 and 8.

Racing on Maine’s Fair Circuit will resume at Skowhegan State Fair on Aug. 16 with Sire Stakes divisions for 3 year-old colt and filly trotters.
