Berlin, MD — The Maryland Sire Stakes 3-year-old summer finals were held on Sunday (Aug. 2) at the Casino at Ocean Downs.

Helaine’s Firebird (Allie’s Western-Flannel Yankee) continued to dominate the pacing filly division, winning in 1:59.2 over rival Jodi’s Sweety (JK Outlaw-Queen Jodi) for owner Frank Chick and the trainer-driver combination of Cory Mumford and Charles Perry Jr. Tom and Linda Winebrener are the breeders.

The CR Renegade- Imp’s Flirt filly Marshalinn used post one to her advantage in the filly trot. Leaving the gate quickly, Marshalinn never looked back, finishing the mile with a four length lead over a late closing Wynnfield Sunset (Doggone Yankee-Wynnfield Molly). Local horseman John Dixon owns, trains and bred the filly. Bryan Truitt was in the bike, stopping the clock in 2:02.

The pacing colts continue to be dominated by the Tom Cooke entry of Toms Tornado and Toms Typhoon, both homebreds by the stallion Cam’s Rocket. Toms Typhoon’s driver Roger Plante Jr. was content to sit in the pocket behind stablemate Toms Tornado until the head of the stretch, charging past the leader to win by a neck at the wire in 1:55.1. Roger Hans trains both colts.

The trotting colts finished the stakes with Doggone Slots (Doggone Yankee-Juanna Play Slots) making his move at the three-quarter pole and striding off with an almost five length win, giving driver Roger Plante Jr. his second stakes win for the night. Whitesville Dixon (Doggone Yankee-Whitesville Tara) was second in the 1:59.2 mile. Tom and Gregg Morris co-own and bred Doggone Slots.

The Maryland Standardbred Fund (foaled) stakes are up next with the 2-year-olds on Sunday (Aug. 9) and the 3-year-olds on Thursday (Aug. 13).
