Muzzle The Yakker tops third session of Lexington Selected Sale

Lexington, KY — Muzzle The Yakker, a trotting filly from the family of Dan Patch Award-winner Casual Breeze, was the top-selling yearling during the third session of the Lexington Selected Sale, going for $200,000 to Sweden’s Reijo Liljendahl. She was among nine horses to sell for six figures Thursday (Oct. 4) at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion, extending the sale’s record this year for purchases of at least $100,000 to 119.
A total of 162 horses sold in the third session, grossing $6.75 million and averaging $41,704. The average was down 12.4 percent from last year’s $47,594 when trotting colt Southwind Bugz was the night’s sales-topper at $335,000, but nearly identical to the 2016 third-session average of $41,834.
The overall 2016 sale set a then-record average price of $56,304, which was surpassed in 2017 by an average of $58,537. This year’s average after three sessions is $78,002, up nearly 6 percent compared to last year’s $73,594 at the same point.
This year’s nine six-figure sellers in the third session equaled the total for the same night last year.
Muzzle The Yakker is a daughter of Explosive Matter out of Baileys Breeze. She was bred and consigned by Winbak Farm. Baileys Breeze is a half-sister to Casual Breeze and sibling to four other six-figure earners.
Torrent, a trotting filly by Father Patrick out of Downpour, was Thursday’s second-highest seller, purchased by agent Jim Glass for $162,000. She is a three-quarter sister to Kentucky Sire Stakes champion Forecast. She was bred and consigned by Diamond Creek Farm.
Rounding out the top three was Perfect, a pacing filly by American Ideal out of O’Brien Award-winner Glowing Report. She was purchased for $135,000 by Willow Oak Ranch. She was bred by Steve Jones and consigned by Jones’ Cameo Hills Farm. Glowing Report’s siblings include stakes-winners Perfect Union and Must See, who was the dam of 2009 Pacer of the Year Well Said.
Among sires with multiple yearlings sold during the three sessions, trotter Muscle Hill tops the sire standings for highest average price with 48 yearlings selling for an average of $121,000. Pacer Somebeachsomewhere is next with 26 yearlings selling for an average of $106,269, followed by trotter Father Patrick with 44 for $92,909 and trotter Chapter Seven with 24 for $90,542.
Muscle Hill is the top-grossing sire, totaling $5.80 million, followed by pacer Captaintreacherous with 55 yearlings totaling $4.89 million ($89,000 average).

The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale got off to a strong start Tuesday night (Oct. 2) at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion, with five yearlings selling for at least $300,000 to spark a 10.6 percent increase in average price compared to last year’s record-setting event. An additional 12 horses sold for at least $200,000 and a total of 64 of the 102 horses sold reached six figures. The sales topper Tuesday was Treasure Trove, a full brother to two-time Pacer of the Year Captaintreacherous. The colt sold for $360,000 to John Cancelliere.

For the second consecutive year, session No. 2 of the Lexington Selected Sale produced a new No. 1. And this year it did it twice. Chestnut Hill, a trotting colt by Muscle Hill out of Dan Patch Award-winner Poof She’s Gone, sold for $410,000 on Wednesday night (Oct. 3) at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion to Richard “Nifty” Norman as agent. The price established Chestnut Hill as the event’s top seller, surpassing the $400,000 for trotting filly Bellareina Dolce earlier in the second session.

Newyorknewyork Deo, a trotting colt from the family of 2007 Horse of the Year Donato Hanover, was the top-selling yearling during Friday’s (Oct. 5) fourth session of the Lexington Selected Sale, purchased for $110,000 by the Andy Miller Stable as agent. The sale has already grossed a record $37 million, surpassing the previous benchmark of $36.4 million set last year, with the final session remaining Saturday night.
