Delaware, OH — Why would someone from New Jersey travel all the way to central Ohio to see a harness race? And, why would they do it for 30 years?
Les Cahn and three friends from Brigatine, N.J., which is located on the outer banks north of Atlantic City, once again have come to Delaware, Ohio, to see the Little Brown Jug.
“The Jug is the Kentucky Derby of harness racing,” said Cahn. “The setting is great. A county fair with 50,000 in attendance. And the crowd really gets into the racing. Once you have been here it just gets into your blood. So many great colts and such great racing.”
While in high school, Cahn and his friends spent many nights at Yonkers and Roosevelt Raceways. “We loved the racing.”
Cahn and friends come to Delaware on Saturday before the start of Grand Circuit racing. “We play golf and sometimes go to the races at the Ashland Fair.”
Cahn’s favorite race was in 1993 when Life Sign came from far back to beat Riyadh by a head.
“John Campbell did a fantastic job in driving Life Sign. The most heartbreaking race was in 1992 when Fake Left beat Western Hanover.”
