Northfield’s Horse of the Year finds winner’s circle

by Keith Gisser, Publicity Director, Northfield Park

Jack Shearer’s Polo Jenn, who shared local Horse of the Year honors at Northfield in 2007, found her way to the winner’s circle in her second seasonal start Friday, taking the $6,500 Mares Winners Over Pace in 1:56.3. A clever drive by Wyatt Irvine got the Jeff Cox-trainee the win.

Polo Jenn moved to the lead and hit the quarter in 27.3 and was immediately challenged by Ashland Blue. Rather than engage, Irvine allowed Ashland Blue to clear and the half was reached in 57.1. Favored Streetcarnamedsire immediately moved up on the leader and battled with her nose-to-nose for 3/8 of a mile (the 3/4 time was 1:26.2) while Irvine sat patiently in the pocket. He used the passing lane to go by the tiring leader and get the win.

Polo Jenn is an 8-year-old Polo Player mare, who has now won 44 career races and banked $243,244.
