Columbus, OH — From the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association Facebook page on Sunday (Jan 2): Jan. 1 accident at MGM Northfield update.

Aaron Merriman and Eric Tharps were both cleared to drive. Rockstar outrider Nadine Habke and Merriman were back in action tonight (Sunday) at MGM Northfield. Ryan Stahl remains in the hospital receiving care for his injured ribs and lung. After additional evaluation, no additional injuries have been reported on Ryan Stahl or the two horses involved that did not suffer immediate catastrophic injury.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the connections of the three equine athletes we lost, the injured horses, and Ryan and his family for a speedy discharge and recovery.

Accidents are always unexpected and tragic. Discussions have commenced with the Racing Commission on safety protocol review, improvements to the current warning light system, racing official’s communication, and driver post-accident treatment and release protocol going forward.
