Ohio Sires Stakes Championships this weekend

Columbus, OH — The Ohio Sires Stakes Championships, featuring the best state-bred harness racing youngsters and older competitors in Buckeye land, will be contested this weekend at both Eldorado Scioto Downs and MGM Northfield Park.

On Saturday night (Sept. 4), Scioto Downs will host four $85,000 OSS contests for older horses, while on Sunday night (Sept. 5), eight $300,000 championships for 2- and 3-year-old trotting and pacing colts and fillies will be hosted by Northfield Park.

In the trotting ranks $1 million earners Mission Accepted and I Know My Chip head up the Veteran Championship for horses and geldings, while the Veteran Mares Championship features recent $100,000 Aldrich winner Weslynn Quest and former OSS champs Kikimora and Pure Chance.

At Northfield Park, the standouts among the youngsters of the sport will vie. Stallions represented in the four trotting contests include eight by Uncle Peter, five each by Triumphant Caviar and What The Hill, three by Wishing Stone, and two each by Creatine, Full Count, and My MVP. The stallions Cash Hall, Corragioso, Dontyouforgetit, and Long Tom are all represented by one foal each competing in these events.

Horses to watch in these 2-year-old championships include Caviar Gold and Gabbys Big Coin — who are tied in both monies earned ($50,000) from winning two OSS legs. These two face off in the 2-year-old colt and gelding trot (race nine) championship.

In the 2-year-old filly trotting championship stablemates Gabbys C Note, Caviar Roxie Due, and Stephanie Hill — who finished first, second and third in the OSS standings — are all going postward (race seven).

The 2-year-old colt pacing championship features Sling Shock and Gulf Shores — both winners of three OSS legs — in race four, while among the freshmen pacing fillies, fans will witness the undefeated, six-time winner Sea Silk try to defend her crown from post eight against three-time OSS leg winner and stablemate Cape Cod Hanover, who leaves from the rail, in race eight.

Among the pacing youngsters, the Ohio-registered stallion Downbytheseaside has the most foals going postward in the four OSS championships with 11. The stallion Racing Hill has six, while McArdle has three and Rockin Amadeus has two. The Ohio-based stallions Big Bad John, Bring On The Beach, Domethatagain, Dragon Again, Fear The Dragon, Mr Apples, Nob Hill High, Well Said, Western Vintage, and Yankee Cruiser all are represented by one foal each in these races.

Three-tear-old trotters who bear watching include two-time OSS leg winner Celebrate With Me, who starts from post seven in race two, while the undefeated (in 2021) Winning Ticket heads up the colt championship (race 12) as the winner of $100,000 in OSS dollars via his victories in all four OSS legs.
