OSS Gold Final to Somebody To Love

CAMPBELLVILLE, ON – When 2-year-olds meet on the racetrack, almost anything can happen, and that goes double when it’s 2-year-old trotting fillies, but in the C$130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final at Mohawk racetrack.

Saturday evening, 27-1 longshot Somebody to Love emerged victorious from a skirmish which saw co-favorites Windsun Magical and Feels Like Magic, as well as John Bax entry Gaelic Mistress, all break stride and put themselves out of the running.

Somebody to Love, a daughter of Angus Hall out of the Breeders Crown champion Pick Me Up, came three-wide under the urging of Luc Ouellette to tag Its My Time in the final stride before the wire, posting a new lifetime mark of 1:57.1 in the process. In Fine Form, an ‘also eligible’ entry who slipped into post six when Magical Memories was scratched lame, moved up to take the show spot with Beyond Limits holding on for fourth.

It was the second win in seven starts for the freshman filly conditioned by Darren McCall for the Mentally Stable of Delray Beach, Florida.

“She’s very well-mannered, considering her mother wasn’t so well-mannered,” said a candid McCall. “They look alike as well, but (Somebody to Love) probably isn’t as good-gaited as her mother. She’s got the same speed, and she’s definitely got a lot more brains! Her mother was very fast and probably not so smart.

“We’re trying to protect her as much as we can,” he added. “She was staked to a lot of races but I decided not to race her against the better fillies like Snow White. We decided to just stick to Sires Stakes and try to keep her fresh, and hopefully make it into the Super Finals.”
