Pebble Beach headlines Monday card at Red Mile

Lexington, KY – On Monday afternoon (Aug. 15) Red Mile will host two $80,000 second round legs of the Kentucky Championship series, three $30,000 second round legs of the Kentucky Commonwealth series and four $15,000 second round legs of the Kentucky Golden Rod series for freshman and sophomore trotters and pacers on a 13-race card.

North America Cup victor Pebble Beach (Todd McCarthy) seeks his sixth win of the season and second in sire stakes company in the first Championship leg for 3-year-old male pacers. The son of Somebeachsomewhere is trained by Noel Dailey and will leave from post position three in the seventh race.

Pebble Beach is 6-5 on the morning line in the field of six. The Kentucky champion returned to his winning ways on Aug. 7 in the first round of this series after a third-place finish in the $350,000 Adios final at The Meadows on July 30.

Owned by Patricia Stable, Joe Sbrocco, Country Club Acres and Laexpessfoderadeovolente, Pebble Beach sports a record of 18-12-3-3 and has banked $897,650.

Race 10 is the second division of the Championship series and is for 2-year-old trotting fillies. Walner Payton (Walner-Lonely Lady) is the 9-2 second morning line favorite. The newly crowned New Jersey champion drew post position 11 and Dexter Dunn will hold the lines.

The filly was fourth in the first leg of this series on Aug. 1 to Wind Chime (Father Patrick-Wind Stroll) who is also in this field (T. McCarthy, post position 10, 7-1).

Walner Payton is trained by Chris Ryder and owned by Ken Jacobs. The filly has a record of 4-2-0-1 and has earned $145,000. She was a $510,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase last year and her dam is a full sibling to Bar Hopping (Muscle Hill, $1.29 million).

The three Commonwealth divisions consist of two races for 2-year-old pacing fillies and one for 3-year-old male pacers.

The three Golden Rod divisions are comprised of three contests for 2-year-old filly trotters and one event for 3-year-old male pacers.

Monday’s card also features a guaranteed $10,000 Pick-4 (races six through nine) in conjunction with the U.S. Trotting Association’s Strategic Wagering Program.

First post at Red Mile is 1 p.m. EST. Sire stakes action continues Tuesday (Aug. 16) with nine races.
