Penzance Hanover rises, repeats at Dover

Dover, DE — Penzance Hanover, who soundly defeated $30,000 claimers in his last start, stepped up to spring a 19-1 upset in Thursday night’s (March 25) $21,000 Open Handicap Pace at Dover Downs.

Penzance Hanover (blue headgear) earned his fifth win in seven starts since being acquired by trainer-driver Art Stafford Jr.

JJ Flynn seized the early lead from Sicily at the end of a hard-fought :25.4 first quarter while Penzance Hanover stalked comfortably from fifth. While JJ Flynn backed the half down to :55.2, trainer-driver Art Stafford Jr. angled Penzance Hanover second-over behind even money favorite Slick Tony, who advanced first-up from fourth. After riding live cover up the backstretch, Penzance Hanover circled three-wide to challenge JJ Flynn past three-quarters in 1:22.4, setting up a stretch duel between the two former claimers. Penzance Hanover powered by to win by a neck in 1:50.1. JJ Flynn (Montrell Teague) was a game second; Sicily (Victor Kirby) finished third.

Penzance Hanover, a 7-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding, has won five of his seven starts to date since Stafford acquired him in January. He has now won 20 times in his career.

Allan Davis recorded a driving triple.
