from Horse Lovers United
Salisbury, MD — This Sunday (Oct. 9), a Rickshaw Rumble will take place at Harrington Raceway. This is a fund-raiser that benefits Horse Lovers United, Inc., a non-profit horse rescue organization based in Salisbury, Md., and serving the Delmarva Peninsula.
HLU is currently caring for 13 horses while they wait for permanent adoptive homes. Chances for this are slim for many of them, because they are either too old to be desirable to many families, or not ridable. Most people want a nearly perfect horse. All of the current horses are Standardbreds that came to the rescue because they were no longer competitive at racing.
The Rickshaw Rumble takes place on the race track, but all the participants are humans — no horses. Owners, drivers, trainers and grooms will get between the shafts of a race bike and become the “horse” and a driver can be anybody. The race is only 1/16th of a mile and it is a lot of fun for everybody involved and the fans enjoy it, also.
Each team finds a sponsor to donate $100 to HLU in order to participate. Everybody at the track is allowed to make a $2 “bet” on which team they think will win. Everybody who picks the winner has their name put in a jar and one name is drawn to receive a beautiful gift basket. The horse people in the paddock also get to bet and receive a nice bucket full of prizes.
Post time at Harrington is at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday and these “races” will take place between some of the early races.
