Roctavious wins Rosecroft Open

Ft. Washington, MD — Speed duels are fun and exciting to watch as horses basically are rolling at top speed. The problem is, for the horse parked out, that horse is going a longer mile than the horse on the inside.

On Sunday night (Oct. 10) at Rosecroft, Rocktavious (Jason Thompson) and Volley Ball Beach (Barton Dalious) locked up for three-quarters of a mile through fractions of :26, :53, and 1:21 and in the end, Rocktavious, the horse on the inside, survived, edging a fast closing Starship (Jonathan Roberts) in 1:50.4.

Thompson guided the $18.00 winner in the $11,000 Open Handicap for owner Bib Roberts and trainer Megan Roberts, giving the 8-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover his fifth win of the year and 42nd of his career.

In Maryland Sires Stakes action on the betting card, the John Wagner barn went 1-2-3 in preliminary one for 2-year-old filly pacers as Janet’s For Real ($7.60) won for the second time this year in eight starts, holding off Lisas All In (Eric Davis) and Connies All In (Jared Moyer) in 1:59.1. The trifecta paid $1,364.40. Pamela Wagner bred and owns the winner, a daughter of Rusty’s For Real.

In the colt and gelding event, Moyer guided Donnys All In ($13.00), a talented, but green colt, to his first lifetime win in 1:57.3, easily the fastest mile in the division this year. John Wagner trains the son of Rusty’s All In, for Pamela Wagner. Anthonys All In (Wagner) was second and Rapid Pulse (Thompson) was third.

In two-non betting events for $7,000, You’ll Never Be Me was an easy winner for Russell Foster in 2:04.4, as the freshman trotting daughter of the pacing sire Cam’s Rocket won for the second time in four starts. Richard Hans is the owner, breeder and trainer.

In the colt and gelding division, Hoofbeats De Vie made it four for five in 2021, holding off Bonjour Mary Ellen (Jim Morand) and Whitesville Mr AW (David Hill III) in 2:03.3. Christopher Lakata trains the winner for owner-breeder Joie De Vie Farm.
