Providence Forge, VA – Long time Standardbred horseman Ronald Bennett McLenaghan, 66, of Providence Forge, VA, formerly of Napan, New Brunswick, passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020.

A true Canadian man, he would lend a helping hand wherever and whenever needed. Anyone who knew him knew he was full of life. His love for animals led him to Standardbred race horses including owning, breeding, training and driving many of his favorite horses to the winner’s circle. He was a self-employed concrete worker by trade and owner-operator of Canuck Construction.

Mr. McLenaghan competed regularly at Colonial Downs during the track’s harness racing seasons in New Kent that extended from 1998-2014. One of his best horses was You’re Welcome, who bankrolled $158,391 from 163 starts. The son of Dragon Again raced from 2004-2011 and recorded a life mark of 1:52.1 at Colonial in 2007. Another favorite of his was A Canuck Eh, who produced 21 wins. Another horse, Caloric, earned $100,908 and set a life mark of 1:53.0 in Colonial’s first season.

Mr. McLenaghan also competed at two other Virginia harness racing venues — Oak Ridge in Nelson County and at the Shenandoah County Fair in Woodstock.

Mr. McLenaghan was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben and Elda McLenaghan. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Wendy McLenaghan; three sons, Kristopher (Chantal), Andy and Ryan McLenaghan; two daughters, Tammy Crosby (Bryan) and Stacey McLenaghan (Corey); two sisters, Debbie Knowles and Heather Carroll; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be no services at this time.
