from Blue Chip Farms
Wallkill, NY — Blue Chip Farms is sad to report that Samshu Bluegrass p,3,1:57.4; 1:55 ($664,978), 30, was euthanized Wednesday morning (August 10) after having resided at the farm for 23 years.
A top Open mare, Samshu Bluegrass was named Older Pacing Mare of the Year in 1986 after winning the Breeders Crown. She had 15 foals during her broodmare career whose combined earnings were just short of a million dollars.
Samshu Bluegrass was retired from the broodmare ranks in 2003 (her last foal was carried via a recipient mare). At that time she became a happy resident of Blue Chip’s “geriatric” group.
Her mobility had become increasingly impaired during the last six months, necessitating the tough decision Tuesday by the farm’s veterinarian, Dr. Herbert Burns, after a routine weekly inspection.
She was buried in the farm’s cemetery.
