Saylor glides to Vernon victory

Vernon, NY — Saylor and Claude Huckabone III grabbed the featured $6,000 trot at Vernon Downs on Friday (July 30).

After dueling for early control, Saylor found another gear in the stretch and coasted to victory in Friday’s top trot at Vernon Downs. Fotowon photo.

Spoiler Alert (Truman Gale) went straight to the front, but Saylor took over the lead just before hitting the first quarter in :29.2. The two battled all around the first turn, and Saylor was finally able to clear on the backstretch. He used a :28.3 second quarter to reach the half in :58, and he sped to three-quarters in 1:26.

Turning for home, Spoiler Alert popped out of the pocket to re-engage the leader, but Saylor found another gear and flew down the stretch to win easily in 1:55.2. Eternal Prince (Justin Huckabone) rallied for second; Spoiler Alert hung on for third.

Saylor is a 4-year-old gelding by Chapter Seven trained by Huckabone for Go Where The Money Is Stable and James Crawford IV. It was his fifth win this season and the seventh of his career. He paid $5.90 to win.

Driver Ben McNeil and trainer John McNeil III combined for two wins on the card, winning with I’ve Got Hootspa ($18.00) and Damon Blue Chip ($33.00). Chris Long drove two winners on the card.

Live racing returns to Vernon Downs on Saturday (July 31) with a 10-race card. Post time is 6:10 p.m.
