Steven Wahrhaftig, 69, dies

Columbus, OH — Steven Wahrhaftig, 69, a former resident of Liberty, N.Y., died June 3, 2021, in Aventura, Fla.

A graveside service was held in Liberty, N.Y., on June 6.

Mr. Wahrhaftig was a kind, gentle soul, very bright and easy going who had a passion for harness racing which was cultivated from 55-plus years as a frequent patron of Monticello Raceway. In fact, his love of harness racing was a significant factor in his decision to attend Southampton College on Long Island so he would be within driving distance of Roosevelt and Yonkers raceways. Over the years, he owned numerous racehorses and introduced many new owners to the sport through partnerships.

For many years, Mr. Wahrhaftig worked as an insurance agent for The Prudential Insurance Company. When he wasn’t working, he could be found at a nearby racetrack or flying around the country with his closest friend Paul.

He loved eating good food at popular restaurants. He always had an incredible memory and was a television and movie buff.

He is survived by his sister, Jody (Matthew) Ernandes. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leila; and a younger brother, David.

He leaves behind many friends from around the country and will be remembered and dearly missed by all who knew him.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, 240 Main St., Goshen, NY 10924.
