Taser Gun defeated in namesake race

by Tim Jones

Race Ten at the Brown County fair Thursday evening featured millionaire pacer Taser Gun and Chicago stalwart Constant Change battling for a purse of $17,000. The exciting finish was decided by a photo in which Constant Change nosed Taser Gun at the wire.

Leaving from posts one and two respectively, Constant Change led to the first turn of the half mile oval only to go off-stride, handing the lead to Andy Miller and Taser Gun. Tom Simmons expertly and quickly put Constant Change back on the pace for a pocket trip, with Nick Prather and Gold Dust Mike parked to the quarter in 28.2. Gold Dust Mike, while still first up pressured Taser Gun, on the rail, to the half in 57.4. Constant Change followed those two pacers in third going into the final lap. Down the backstretch Taser Gun and Constant Change accelerated into another gear and the battle was on to the three quarters in 1:27.2.

Around the final turn and into the stretch Simmons pulled the Cole Muffler offspring from the pocket to duel Taser Gun to the wire. Even though Constant Change was drifting to the middle of the track he managed to nip the game Taser Gun at the wire by a nose in 1:55.4. The result was not finalized until an inquiry of the rough gated pacer in the first turn found there was no interference, and the development of the win photo.

No matter the outcome of the contest, race officials announced that the ICF-4 year old and up pace of the Brown County fair would be renamed the Taser Gun pace, in honor of the pride of Cunningham Racing and Medora, Illinois.
