Tom McCarthy joins USTA as California ID Technician

Columbus, OH — The U.S. Trotting Association announced Tuesday (June 1) that Tom McCarthy has been retained to serve as the organization’s ID Technician for District 3.

“Due to the unfortunate passing of veteran racing official and long-time ID Technician Bill Vallandingham, the entire district was left at a great loss,” said USTA Chief Operating Officer and Director of Registry TC Lane. “Fortunately, we were able to coordinate this arrangement of securing Tom (McCarthy) as a replacement.”

Tom McCarthy has been retained to serve as the U.S. Trotting Association’s ID Technician for District 3.

McCarthy has been a consultant for the California Horse Racing Board’s (CHRB) Racing Safety Project (RSP) since May of 2010. In addition to his role with RSP, he also works as a Safety Steward and has been designated to serve in that capacity for the Standardbred meet at Cal Expo since 2015.

He played a major role in assisting the CHRB, who were the first to enact a microchipping regulation mandate for racehorses in the United States, in executing the program for Thoroughbreds in 2016. In 2018, he assisted the USTA in the implementation of microchipping at the Standardbred meet at Cal Expo.

McCarthy holds a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Fresno State and an MBA in Sustainability from Marylhurst University.

He can be contacted by phone at 916.257.9615 or by email at tmccarthygsd@gmail.com.
