Scarborough, ME — Waterloo Willie became the latest trotter to have his name etched in the Scarborough Dwns record books as he threw in the race of his lifetime on a sweltering Friday afternoon (July 5).

Waterloo Willie, with driver Dan Deslandes, established a track record at Scarborough Downs on Friday.

Waterloo Willie becoming the fastest older gelding to ever win at Scarborough, stopping the clock in a torrid 1:57.1. Dan Deslandes called the shots behind the 6-year-old son of SJ’s Caviar for trainer Randy Bickmore and owner Kevin Gee.

The effort eclipsed the former standard established by Victory Tax (Drew Campbell), whose 1:57.2 mark had stood the test of time since October 2012.

“All the thanks go to Randy Bickmore and staff as they all work very hard for me,” said Gee. “This was my 401st career win as an owner, and it’s been a great ride, with many people to thank. I’m proud to add this track record to the one established by IPO Blue Chip last year.”

IPO Blue Chip, another trotter owned by Gee, holds both the overall and distaff divisional track records at Scarborough Downs, giving the connections a trifecta of sorts on the Wall of Honor.

Driver Dan Deslandes remained on an extended hot streak Friday, scoring four wins from the eight-race program at Scarborough. Friday’s feat complements his four bagger at Plainridge Racecourse on Monday, followed up by a two-win performance at the ‘Ridge on Tuesday and another two-win effort Thursday at the Downs.

“Dan is definitely an up-and-coming driver,” commented Gee. “I’m glad he’s a member of Team Gee this season and I look forward to more performances like today.”

Live racing returns to the Downs at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Back to the Track Day, and will feature the return of Maine Sire Stakes racing.
