Batavia, NY — It was the first day of practice on Monday (August 8) for the local area high school students that are set to participate in Batavia Downs Casino’s 2011 college scholarship race.
Natalie Tuites from Batavia High School arrived early for her first practice session, learning valuable tips from veteran driver-trainer Jim Mulcahy. The 2010 race winner, Kaley Falkowski from Batavia High School, was teamed with Mulcahy in the mile long dash for the cash.
Seniors chosen from Batavia High School, Notre Dame of Batavia High School, Elba High School, Oakfield-Alabama High School, and Pembroke High School will compete for their share of scholarships funds. Five scholarships will be given away totaling $7,500.
Scholarship money will be awarded in the following manner: $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,200 for third place, $800 for fourth place and $500 for fifth place.
Each student is required to practice at least five times during the month of August with the driver/trainer that they are teamed up with. The race exposes the students to the full equine experience associated with the racing industry.
The race takes place on September 10 between the fourth and fifth race of the evening at approximately 7:30 p.m.
This program is a partnership between the Harness Horse Breeders of New York State, the Western New York Harness Horsemen’s Association, Buffalo Raceway and Batavia Downs Casino.
Any age group is allowed to attend Batavia Downs Casino to watch the scholarship race. Admission and parking are always free. Only patrons 18 and over are allowed on the gaming floor.
