Wayne Plowman, 83, dies

Columbus, OH — Wayne Dean Plowman, 83, of Keosauqua, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday (April 14) at his home.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1937, to Wallace and Alice Plowman on the family farm in Kilbourne, Iowa. Wayne graduated from Douds High School. He married Karen VanBlaricom on April 19, 1964.

Wayne served in the United Sates Army from 1960 to 1963. After the Army, he farmed for a few years and then started training and driving harness horses. He continued to race for 40 years. In 1984, his horse Incus won the Illinois Harness Horse of the Year. Upon his retirement, he proudly turned his stables over to his son, Eric. His proudest moment was in 2015 when he was inducted into the Iowa Harness Horsemen’s Living Person Hall of Fame. He enjoyed horses, fishing, camping and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; three children, Teresa White of Danville, Ill., Angela Plowman of Goshen, Ind., Eric (Jennifer) Plowman of Keosauqua, Iowa; seven grandchildren, David Wayne Higgins of South Bend, Ind., Nicole (Adam) Goebel of Sheridan, Ind., Christopher (Allison) Fisher of Kendallville, Ind., David (Jenna) Ambrose of Indianapolis, Ind., Dominick Ambrose of Goshen, Ind., Ella Grace Plowman and Amelia Ann Plowman of Keosauqua, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Khloe, Emily and Ethan Goebel of Sheridan, Ind., Maleah Fisher of Kendallville, Ind., and Alexander Ambrose of Goshen, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Plowman and Alice Kiefer; brother, Wallace Plowman Jr.; daughter, Michelle Plowman; grandson, Gehrig James Plowman; and great-grandchild, Jude Ambrose.

A celebration of life will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. CDT on Saturday (April 24) at Douds Community Center, Douds, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.
