Campbellville, ON — We Will See and driver Ron Pierce stormed their way to a stakes record 1:47.4 mile on Saturday evening (September 3) to capture the 69th edition of the C$832,000 Canadian Pacing Derby at Mohawk.
The 4-year-old son of Western Hanover-Aberdakara notched his 17th career victory for trainer Cosmo ‘Sam’ DePinto and owners Shannon DePinto, Earl Smith and Jerry Silva.
In the early going, Andy Miller sent Atochia to command from post one to lead past the opening panel in a quick :26.1. As the free-for-all pacers marched towards the midway point, Foiled Again (Yannick Gingras) moved to the outside from fourth and took over the lead past the half in :53.4.
As Foiled Again made the lead, Art Professor (Jody Jamieson) tried to clear past him, but the pair were strides apart past three-quarters in 1:20.4. We Will See was perfectly positioned, second-over, with a quarter of a mile of racetrack remaining.
Ron Pierce called upon his charge down the stretch and the winner of C$1,939,684 responded to score the victory. The 2010 Canadian Pacing Derby champion, Won The West finished second with Foiled Again third.
“They were racing hard,” Pierce said following the race. “I was back there coming second over and nice and easy down the back and Jody took a run at Yannick there, almost got around him and Yannick changed his mind and turned his whip around and they were moving right along and I was just back there licking my chops liking the way things were going.”
Trainer Sam DePinto admired the trip Pierce gave We Will See.
“I thought it shaped up very well. He got away fifth and he worked out a beautiful trip with him. They are all tough horses, every one of them.”
We Will See paid $4.80 to win.
