Coleman and Dean trainees ready for OSS battles

by Sandra Snyder, for the Ontario Sires Stakes

Rexdale, ON — Woodbine Racetrack will dangle C$2.4 million over the finish line on Saturday, November 10, as the province’s top 2- and 3-year-old pacers and trotters will battle for a share of the Ontario Sires Stakes purse money in eight season ending Super Finals.

Trainers Casie Coleman and James Dean will both harness one starter in the 2-year-old pacing filly Super Final and one in the 3-year-old pacing colt season finale, but that is where the similarities end. Coleman is full of confidence after Chancey Lady and Golden Seven delivered outstanding performances in their last regular season Gold Series events, while Dean is concerned that Shake That Junk and Domitian Hanover have already crested the peak moments in their season.

“I feel like both of them have a good shot,” says Coleman. “Chancey Lady is obviously the better horse over Golden Seven, but they have both been racing real good and I think both of them have a real shot.”

Chancey Lady heads into the freshman pacing filly Super Final off a neck loss to Voelz Hanover in the October 25 Gold Final at Hiawatha Horse Park, clocked in a world record 1:51.3. The Camluck miss did most of the work on the front end before Voelz Hanover caught her in the stretch, but Coleman says the dainty filly came out of the race in top condition.

“She came out of it great. I was a little worried about her because she’s not a very big filly, but she came out of it super. I was real happy with her,” says the Cambridge resident. “I actually trained her up Monday and she trained super.”

In seven starts Chancey Lady has amassed an impressive record of five wins — including the September 22 Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack — and one second and regular reinsman Mark MacDonald will steer the winner of C$187,840 from post one in the fourth race on Saturday. Rival Voelz Hanover will start from post four and division point leader Shake That Junk will start from post six.

Shake That Junk captured Gold Final titles at Grand River Raceway on August 6 and Rideau Carleton Raceway on October 7. The Camluck miss also emerged victorious in her Robert Stewart Stakes division at Mohawk Racetrack on August 12. In 13 starts the filly has recorded four wins, one second and four thirds and has only missed the top five once — in the October 25 Gold Final at Hiawatha Horse Park where she finished sixth.

“She’s sound, and healthy, and has almost C$300,000 made, but I don’t think we’re as good as Voelz Hanover and Chancey Lady right now,” admits James ‘Friday’ Dean. “Our mare has had a lot of starts. This will be her last race.”

Dean owns Shake That Junk in partnership with Dr. David Powell of Campbellville, P And J Stable of Mississauga and driver Jody Jamieson of Cambridge, and the Campbellville resident shook up the filly’s schedule with a mini-vacation after her October 25 outing. The winner of C$268,319 resumed her training program in the middle of last week and got her final prep on Tuesday morning.

While Shake That Junk enjoyed her break, Dean spent his time working on Domitian Hanover. After finishing second to North America Cup and Little Brown Jug winner Tell All in a Simcoe Stakes division at Mohawk on September 8, Domitian Hanover came up flat in a trio of performances, culminating with a seventh-place finish in a Gold elimination at Woodbine on October 21.

Diagnosed with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage, Domitian Hanover was started on Lasix and Dean gave the colt a trial run last Friday, November 2.

“We started the Lasix and schooled him Friday and he schooled well, so hopefully the Lasix will pick him up,” says Dean. “He’s a good horse. He’s been having some issues lately, but hopefully the Lasix will take care of it.”

Clay Harland Horner and Scott Horner of Toronto own Domitian Hanover, who captured the 2-year-old pacing colt Super Final and division championship last year. John Campbell engineered last year’s victory and the Hall of Fame horseman will return to the race bike behind Domitian Hanover from post three in Saturday’s tenth race, while regular reinsman Mark MacDonald pilots Coleman’s trainee Golden Seven from post six.

Golden Seven heads into the skirmish off an upset victory in the October 28 Gold Final at Woodbine, but Coleman says the Camluck son’s victory was no accident.

“He’s just had some real bad luck,” Coleman explains. “If it wasn’t his own bad luck with soundness and health problems, it was drawing outside posts or getting bad trips. He’s always been a nice horse.”

Golden Seven did not make his Ontario Sires Stakes debut until the September 18 Gold elimination at Kawartha Downs and he made a late break and was placed from fourth back to fifth. In his second shot at the Gold Series, he finished fifth in an October 21 elimination at Woodbine, and Coleman admits that before the October 28 final she laid it on the line for MacDonald.

“Before the race I said to Mark MacDonald, ‘No pressure or nothing, but you must win to get him into the Super Final,'” she recalls. “He gave him a great trip.”

Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, British Columbia owns both Golden Seven and Chancey Lady, and Coleman says they are Breeders Crown bound with both horses.

“He’s put a lot of money into the game and always wanted a super star — like everybody does — and this is the closest shot he’s had, so I hope for him we have some luck,” says Coleman. “It would be nice to get one of these big ones. Either a Super Final or a Breeders Crown would sure be something to win for him.”

Post time at Woodbine Racetrack for Saturday’s lucrative Super Final night is 7:40 p.m., with the division championships slated as races 3 through 10.
