Berlin, MD — A good opening night crowd of 3,164 at Ocean Downs enjoyed Raymond “Shorty” Robinson’s impressive driving triple on Saturday night, June 16.

The popular local driver opened with a second race maiden win for trainer Pam Polk and her 3-year-old filly Wynnfield Molly.

“She’s very handy for a young trotter,” Robinson said. “Had me a little concerned when I warmed her up, was pretty high-strung, but she relaxed and did everything you’re supposed to do in the race.”

Robinson’s second win was with 5-year-old Sometimes Grace.

“Shorty” came from off the pace to win the final race of the evening with 8-year-old It Fits, a gelding owned by his best friend Corey Braden and William Carter, and trained by Robinson’s wife, Carolyn.

Braden was Ocean Downs’ driving champion in 2002 and 2003, after Robinson held that title from 1999 through 2001. Braden now races in New York.

A driving double was logged on opening night by young driver Nicholas Coblentz. 4-year-old gelding Richesslittledevil and 7-year-old mare Winters Call Girl, both trained by George Coblentz III, posted wins.

The fastest time of the evening was a 1:57.1 by 10-year-old gelding Joc O Chip, driven by Charles Perry, Jr.

“He’s one that likes to go to the front. He’s always been a tough one to set in a hole,” Perry said. “He just likes to roll. Tonight was his night.”

Racing resumes in the Ocean Oval’s 59th season of live racing on Sunday night (June 17) with a first post of 7:35 p.m. Admission and parking are free at Ocean Downs.
