Mohawk to host “Drive with Us for Evan’s Legacy” Friday

Campbellville, ON — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and this Friday (Sept. 30) Mohawk Racetrack will host the inaugural “Drive with Us for Evan’s Legacy” fundraiser.

Evan Leversage became well known last October after his hometown of St. George, Ontario presented the 7-year-old with an early-Christmas parade. Evan had been batting an inoperable brain tumor for five years and had wished to see another Christmas.

Unfortunately, Evan did not make it to Christmas and passed away in early December.

Evan’s mother, Nicole Wellwood, and family launched Evan’s Leagacy, a foundation to raise money for research into childhood cancers and brain tumors. All proceeds raised by Evan’s Legacy benefit the Pediatric Brain Cancer Impact Grant at Toronto SickKids.

In an effort to raise funds for the foundation, Mohawk Racetrack will host “Drive with Us for Evan’s Legacy” on Friday evening (Sept. 30). The night will feature sulky rides on the racetrack, a race in memory of Evan and raffle prizes.

The raffle prizes include Toronto Raptors tickets, donated by the Central Ontario Standardbred Association, a flat screen TV and other great items.

Many WEG drivers will be donating a portion of their earnings from Friday’s card to Evan’s Legacy. The following drivers have confirmed a donation: Trevor Henry, Phil Hudon, Steve Condren, Doug McNair, Paul MacDonell, Mike Saftic, Sylvain Filion, Jonathan Drury, James MacDonald and Rick Zeron.

Raffle tickets can be purchased throughout the week at the program desk or in the race office. Tickets will be sold on Friday evening at the Evan’s Legacy booth inside the Grandstand.
