Catskill Steve offers his picks for the guaranteed $10,000 Pick-5 pool at Yonkers Raceway on August 5, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.

Yonkers Raceway Pick-5, Races 5-9, Monday, August 5, 2013.

$.50 play: 138/367/25/25/13 = $36

Analysis:

Race 5: (1) Nowerland Firebird I picked her last time and she made two moves from 7-hole over sloppy track before tiring. Although I’m not excited at the prospect of heavy chalk, she does get the pole and is a must on Pick-5 ticket. (3) Hardrockenjessica doesn’t win often but moves inside off a series of good closing tries and has a shot. (8) Believable draws 8-hole but has speed to overcome it and has been consistent at this level, winning at this distance three back.

Race 6: (3) Alhambra has been competitive on the tough NYSS trail including her last try when she finished evenly for show in 1:54.2 Saratoga mile after being impeded briefly past the half. Filly also shows two solid Yonkers efforts at this level in her recent starts in Westchester County. (6) JK Cheerleader and (7) Thisthatntheother both come out of the same race against tougher NY-breds in Excelsior Series and both have been consistent all year.

Race 7: (2) Stunning Lady has finished evenly in both Yonkers starts and sandwiched in between chased a 1:51.4 Pocono mile. Finds a nice spot and can brush past these. (5) Allemande Hanover Philadelphia invader broke briefly before the quarter, recovered and brushed to the top, chased a fast final half and finished second behind runaway winner. Moves into good barn in return to smaller oval, may try leaving and looks like a price threat if Dube can keep her flat.

Race 8: (2) Donau has been chasing wicked miles north of the border and shows a mark of 1:50.4 at Woodbine back in April on 44 degree night, gets Sears and looks tough. (5) Woodstock Hanover starts at 4th different track in last four starts and has some back class. Gets Brennan and will likely try the front.

Race 9: (1) Strung Out speedy 8-year-old went too fast on the engine in Jackpot Series here in last two falling short on the wire but doing well to hold place. (3) Mr Rockford had no shot in Jackpot Consolation last time. Gets a better spot to set up his brush and won in 1:53.3 here earlier in the year
