by Ayers Ratliff, Northfield Park Publicity Department

Ayers Ratliff offers his picks for the $15,0000 Pick-5 and the $10,000 Pick-4 at Northfield Park on Jan. 31, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.

Northfield Park Pick-5, Races 3-7, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, Northfield Park will offer a $15,000 guaranteed pool in the Pick-5. Beginning in Race 3, the $15,000 guarantee includes a carryover of $3,791.78. Northfield Park’s Pick-5, Pick-4 and Pick-3s offer a reduced takeout rate of just 14 percent (the lowest in harness racing).

$1 play: 269/12/46/3/139 = $36

Analysis:

Race 3: (2) Tag The Lady improved in his last start; could get the job done if he maintains his improved form. (6) Prime Number drops in class but does not have a favorable post position. (9) Traveling Tune has not missed the ticket since going on Lasix; tonight should be no exception.

Race 4: (1) Perfect Door is a classy veteran who drops in class and draws the rail. (2) Gyraider has had a runner-up performance in his last four starts here at Northfield; steps up tonight for the win.

Race 5: (4) Cummingsandgoings has proven to be very good at this level of competition; tonight should be no exception. (6) Fried By Five drops in class and looks to be the best.

Race 6: (3) Pinnochio dropped to this level last week and was an easy winner; looks to repeat tonight.

Race 7: (1) Miss Big Time makes her second start for her new barn and should only get better; this race looks wide open. (3) Mach N Cookies is one of several who could get the job done in here. (9) Delightful Party should get a good trip from the second tier and could step-up and be heard from tonight.

Northfield Park Pick-4, Races 8-11, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, Northfield Park is again offering a $10,000 guaranteed Pick-4 pool. Northfield Park’s Pick-4 starts in race eight and offers a 14 percent takeout rate (the lowest in harness racing).

$1 play: 67/169/149/159 = $54

Analysis:

Race 8: (6) Classy Rocket has not won since entering this level; tonight could be her night again. (7) Rock’n Roll Queen has enough speed to win in here, but her lines raise several red flags.

Race 9: (1) Can Repeat has been racing well for his new connections; deserves a big look from the rail. (6) Columbia Art has been racing very well, but was a little flat in his last start; could rebound and do well again. (9) Morningsailor looked to have an improved form in his last start and that could propel him to doing well again.

Race 10: (1) Yankeedoodledandee has the inside advantage and that could be key to him doing well tonight. (4) Dr Jacks Shack seems to get along well with Aaron; could get it all tonight. (9) Rare Commodity has first time Noble and could get a good trip from the second tier.

Race 11: (1) Hoosier Lion has good gate speed and the rail should only help him. (5) Pure Fantasy gets second with some regularity, but the horse that is second could be the winner with a little racing luck. (9) Cruisin The Waves has been doing well; the second tier should help him so he does not get the lead and exhaust himself.
