Lexington Selected Yearling Sale continues with solid second session

by David Carr, the U.S. Trotting Association

Lexington, KY — The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale continued with a solid second session on Tuesday night (Oct. 4), with an average price of $44,715 for the 158 youngsters who walked through the ring. Although this marked a decline in the average of about $1,350 compared to the second session last year, overall the sale is still showing an increase of nearly 1.5 percent through two sessions.

A large crowd of discriminating buyers turned out at the Fasig-Tipton sale arena. Although they were often cautious in getting the bidding started, some lively battles did take place. The sales topper for the evening was the trotting colt Spyglass Volo. His sire is Donato Hanover, Horse of the Year in 2007 and enjoying a spectacular year with his first crop racing as 2-year-olds. The colt’s dam is the millionaire Stroke Play, a two-time divisional Horse of the Year. Brothers Gerald and Norman Smiley teamed up with Theresa Silva to pay $210,000 for this royally-bred colt from the Kentuckiana Farms consignment.

The other three gait and sex divisions managed to tie for the runner-up spot on the leader board for the night, with representatives selling for $150,000. The first of these was the filly trotter Gliding Light, a daughter of Yankee Glide. Although unraced, her dam PJ Naomi has been an excellent producer, with all eight previous foals being winners, including four with earnings over $100,000. Robert Lindstrom signed the ticket as agent for Thomas Persson Finans AB. Kentuckiana Farms consigned as agent for breeders Tony Holmes and Walter Zent.

The top pacing colt for the evening was Mindset, the first foal out of stakes winning mare Has An Attitude. The colt’s sire, American Ideal, has had an excellent year with his first crop racing this year. Trainer Tony Alagna made the winning bid for this Brittany Farms youngster.

Honors among pacing fillies went to Mattie Terror Girl, by Western Terror out of Mattcheck Girl, making this yearling a full sister to Straight Shooting ($667,914) and Drop The Ball ($344,311). The winning bidder was Big Al’s Stables Inc. for this filly consigned by Walnut Hall Stock Farm as agent.
