Future viability of Scioto Downs discussed in press conference

by John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association

Columbus, OH — The future viability of Scioto Downs was the topic of a hastily called and well-attended press conference at the Columbus harness racetrack on Thursday morning, May 20.

Stacy Cahill, Scioto’s chief operating executive, discussed the importance of the track — and racing industry in Ohio — being permitted to operate video lottery terminals. She said the track, opened in 1959, could close without such relief.

Ohio’s voters are expected to have their say this fall as to whether VLTs may become a reality at the state’s seven racetracks. LetOhioVote.org, a group which successfully challenged Gov. Ted Strickland’s order to have the Ohio Lottery install video lottery machines at the racetracks, has gathered enough valid signatures to put the issue before voters this coming November.
