Sir Beach Dragon wins Tuesday feature at Colonial

by Kyle Fitzgerald, for Colonial Downs

New Kent, VA — Sir Beach Dragon overcame a five length deficit at the quarter pole to annex Colonial’s Tuesday night (September 18) feature, a $7,500 conditioned pace, in a meet-best time of 1:52.1.

Sir Beach Dragon benefited from a patient drive by David Ingraham. Jenneration shot to the lead to set a quick early pace while being hounded by Drivin’ Miss Rudee down the backside. Sir Beach Dragon was 11-3/4 lengths behind after an opening quarter in :26.3, trailing all but stablemate Scotty’s Sweety.

Jennaration continued to fly down the long Colonial Downs backstretch, crossing the half-mile fraction in :55 and barreling into the turn with a 1-1/4 length lead over Drivin’ Miss Rudee. Sir Beach Dragon was content to remain in sixth around the bend.

Jenneration got to the three-quarters in 1:23, and was still five lengths to the better of Sir Beach Dragon at the top of the lane, but that rival began to rev up on the far outside. Drivin’ Miss Rudee and Classic Card Shark rallied down the center of the track in the upper stretch, but Jenneration was still 1-1/2 lengths clear at the eighth pole.

Drivin’ Miss Rudee could not gain any ground, but Sir Beach Dragon and Classic Card Shark blew by the frontstepper in deep stretch with Sir Beach Dragon quickly extending his lead to beat Classic Card Shark by 2-1/4 lengths. Jenneration held on for third, a half-length behind Classic Card Shark.

Sir Beach Dragon set a new lifetime mark with Tuesday’s win, the 6-year-old’s 30th career victory. Dustin Ingraham trains the Sweet Dragon gelding for owner Carolyn Corso.
