Fry doubles her pleasure at Ocean Downs

Berlin, MD — On Saturday night (August 12), driver/trainer/owner Lynn Fry had two of her horses earn their third wins during the current meet at Ocean Downs.

In a first race trot, six-year-old Feel That Muscle won his fifth of the year and has now placed first or second in all five of his races at the Ocean Oval this summer. The Muscle Yankee gelding won only three of five races last year. He won Saturday by coming from well off the pace.

“Everybody expected me to lead with him, but the whole field did,” Fry said.

His come-from-behind win surprised Fry.

“Yeah that was a first. At first I thought I was finished down the backside because he kind of let go…but he’s really much more handable and coming down is just a learning experience for him. He’s learned how to race.”

Fry completed her driving double with a third race win in the bike behind 12-year-old Mister Wonderful, who she owns and trains. This Super Bowl gelding is a big horse and she feared he might not have enough grip on the track, but he led all the way for his third win in his last four starts.

“No matter what, he gives everything he’s got every night,” Fry said after he led wire-to-wire.

Lynn Fry now has seven driving and training wins and is tied for second place in the trainer standings behind leader Mike Hall, who has 17 firsts.

While leading drivers Tony Morgan and W. (David) Hill III were not on Saturday’s card at Ocean Downs, driver Bret Brittingham notched a driving double and is now third in the driver’s title chase.

Three-year-old filly Voluptuous Hanover got her first career win with Brittingham in the bike and seven-year-old Autotrack won his first in two years as Brittingahm had the reigns.

Brittingham now has 14 driving wins this summer at Ocean Downs.

Arthur Foster, Jr. also had a driving double after going winless in his previous five starts at the Ocean Oval.

Eight-year-old mare Fantastic Caprock (Charles Perry, Jr.) became a three-time winner this summer with a seventh race victory from post position three that produced some surprisingly healthy payouts ($22.40, $10.20, $5.60). In addition, the 3-7 exacta was $225.40, the triple returned $1,349.40 and the superfecta brought a $1,619.20 payout.

Sunday’s card at Ocean Downs features the fourth and final leg of the Edgar Whitey Mansfield Memorial Late Closer Series with a purse of $11,000 up for grabs. Garnethill Sizzler won the first three legs with Tony Morgan in the sulky for trainer Richard Ringler, but the leading driver will not be at Ocean Downs Sunday. Robert Shahan gets the drive with the 12-year-old gelding.

First post is 7:35 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
