HARRINGTON, Del. – Andrew Stafford’s Cheyenne Legend ($40.00) scored an upset win in the $32,500 Magician Trot Final and Nancy Laycock and Charles Elliott’s Ellen ‘s Beach Babe ($18.80) won the $38,000 Miss Harrington Final Thursday at Harrington Raceway.
Driven by Eddie Davis Jr., “Legend” sat a pocket journey behind pacesetting Sweet Apple Annie (Eddie Dennis), who went to the front after second-choice Mark (George Dennis) made a break behind the gate.
“Annie” set fractions of 29.4, 1:00.3 and 1:31.2 before Cheyenne Legend reeled her in the stretch, and fought off Go Sassy Go (Walt Callahan), who had a six race win streak snapped. Cheyenne Legend hit the wire almost a full length in front in 2:01.3.
In the Miss Harrington, Ain’t Goin Back was the 3-to-5 choice and set fractions of 28.1, 56.4, and 1:25.1, while pocket sitting Ellen ‘s Beach Babe (Brad Hanners) chased throughout and surged by in the stretch in 1:54.2, a lifetime best. Front Tier Power (Jim Morand) was third.
Both series capped the 2005 spring late closing program at Harrington, which also featured the Adios Harry, an event for 3 & 4 year old pacing colts and geldings.
Also on the card, Susan Looney’s 11-year-old Traveling Man (Ross Wolfenden) made an impressive Harrington debut with a 1:55.2 triumph, boosting his lifetime bankroll to more than $510,000.
