Big Saturday on tap at Freehold

by Don Bielak, publicity director, Freehold Raceway

Freehold, NJ — The Kentucky Derby simulcast and a big, 15 race card of live racing — featuring superfectas in all but one race — top the action at Freehold Raceway on Saturday.

The gates will open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the first simulcast race from Churchill Downs scheduled to go postward at 11:00 a.m.

Freehold’s live card will get underway with a first post of 12:30 p.m. and the slate will be headed up by a pair of $30,738 eliminations for the Dexter Cup Trot. The first four finishers in each elimination will gain berths to the $184,425 Dexter Final, the first test for three-year-old trotters on the road to the Hambletonian.

The overwhelming, 1-2 favorite in the first Dexter elimination is the Paul Doherty-trained entry of Lindy Five Hundred and Clearaway. Lindy Five Hundred will come into the Dexter off a narrow loss in a $14,650 division of the Flower Child at Freehold on April 29, when he finished a neck behind Cromwell in a 1:58 mile. Clearaway most recently scored a 1:57.4 victory in the $30,300 final of the Wyoming Valley Trotting Series at Pocono Downs on April 27.

Great George Two, the impressive winner of a $14,650 division of the Flower Child Trot, was a $25,000 supplementary entry in the Dexter and will open on the board as the 9-5 favorite in the morning line in the second elimination.

As an added attraction on Derby Day, free souvenirs will be handed out by Budweiser from the brewer’s Escalade.

As always, admission to Freehold is free of charge for daytime racing.
