Ultimate Sundance heads Open Handicap Trot at Pompano

by Steve Wolf, Director of Marketing, Pompano Park

Pompano Beach, Florida – March 22, 2005 – Ultimate Sundance, fresh off a 1:55.2 thrashing by two open lengths last week, returns to head the 7th race $9,000 Open Handicap Trot at Pompano Park Wednesday.

His victory last week was a superb effort, considering the 10-year-old gelding by Ultimate Kosmos started from the outside in post 8 and wired the field. It was his second win of the year for the Bruce Ranger Stable.

Ultimate Sundance will start from post seven Wednesday and will be driven by Wally Hennessey.

Their main competition will come from Sweet Count and driver Richard Simard from post three. The 2-1 favorite, despite not having won a race since January and has not started in nearly a month, drew the inside post three position.

Dunkster, who saw his two-race winning streak come to a close at the hands of Ultimate Sundance last week, starts from post six for driver Tom Sells. Prior to last week the six-year-old gelding won the Open Trot with classic come-from-behind triumphs in 1:56.1 and 1:57.2. He is the class of the field with $365,000 in career earnings.

Also entered are Guy Gets Girl (post 1), Trotting Intruder (post 2), Lori Louise (post 4) and U Toe The Bike (post 5).

Trainer George Napolitano, Jr. will be honored after the first race Wednesday as the meets leading trainer this winter for the second straight year. Napolitano, who was the leading trainer in North America in 2004, leaves for Pocono Downs with a 28 win lead over the Bruce Ranger Stable.
