Mohammed Mali trots to sixth straight victory

Mohammed Mali [$2.80, $2.60, $2.20] extended his winning streak to six with a length and a half victory in the second race, the first of three $20,000 divisions of the Horse & Groom Series, on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands.

Mohammed Mali, driven by David Miller and trained by Mark Harder, trotted the mile in 1:55.2 and improved his 2004 record to six wins in seven starts.

Striking Rum turned in a half-length tally over Final Legacy in 1:55.3 in the second of three $20,000 divisions of the Horse & Groom Series.

Miller tipped him off the pylons on the turn for home and cleared to the lead in the stretch after following the cover of Nahcotta Jude.

Miss Fairfax [$4.60, $3.60], who had cut the fractions, held on for second. It was three and a quarter lengths to Sent From Above [$4.20] in third. HZ Easy’s winning streak was snapped at four when he broke stride on the turn for home.

Mohammed Mali lifted his career bankroll to $94,540 for the partnership of D’Elegance Stable of Florham Park, New Jersey; Carmen Iannacone of Lyndhurst, New Jersey and the RCE Stable of Princeton, New Jersey.

The other two divisions, carded as races three and five, were won by longshots. Striking Rum [$41.60, $12.80, $12.40], driven by Yannick Gingras, turned in a half-length tally over Final Legacy [$3.80, $3.20] in 1:55.3, and Speed of Shogun [$21.60, $8.20, $2.80], driven by Brian Sears, held off Lhasa Muscles [$4.40, $2.40] for a head victory in 1:56.

The $99,300 Horse & Groom Final is on March 13.
