Sam Bowie’s Boo’s Boy [$7.40, $5.60, $5.80] tipped out of the pocket at the top of the stretch and surged to a two and three-quarter-length victory in the $77,000 Senior Trendsetter Final, the featured eighth race on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands.

Boo’s Boy paced the mile in 1:51.3, a stakes record replacing the mark of 1:51.4 set by New Riegel Falcon in 2001.

“It was just a perfect trip; I couldn’t ask for a better journey,” said winning driver Jim Morrill Jr. “I was a little concerned, Brian’s horse [Brian Sears driving Fate’s Place] was laboring, and I didn’t know if he was going to have a bad day and not take me far enough. I was just opening that a cat wouldn’t run out in front of me in the stretch. That was the only way I could lose. As long as he can stay sound, he’ll do fine.”

Hi Ho Silver Star [$11.00, $7.40] got up for second and Fate’s Place [$3.60], who had cut the fractions, held on for third by three and a half lengths.

The four-year-old gelded son of Cambest, trained by Richard J. Banca, is owned by former NBA star Sam Bowie of Lexington, Kentucky. It was Boo’s Boy’s third win in six starts this year and pushed his career bankroll to $65,020.

MIKE LACHANCE JUST VISITING

Mike Lachance made his first appearance of the year Sunday afternoon, driving two horses for his son, Patrick.

The senior Lachance, 54, had not driven in a race since November 15, 2004.

The Hall of Famer, with 9,655 career wins and $162 million in purses won, opted to take some time off this winter.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I went to Florida last week and was at Pompano. Tom Harmer wanted me to drive for him in the Isle Of Capri. In France, they wanted me to drive in the Prix d’Amerique. But I didn’t want to. I’m doing this for Patrick. He’s going to Aruba for a few days and asked me initially if I would drive for him. I thought about and will — just for today. I am looking forward to getting back at the end of April, and driving a lot of the younger horses. I was at the training centers last week and must have seen about 100 people I knew. I’m looking forward to racing some of the younger horses. When I get back, I won’t be driving a lot. I don’t want to drive a lot of cheap claimers.”

Lachance finished fourth with Taylorlane Ace in the sixth race and was placed ninth with Hidden Past in the 12th race.
