Corky’s Baylor wins in California

from Cal-Expo Raceway

Sacramento, CA — Sunday was a cloudy, drizzly day in northern California but the track was still fast at first post. The featured race at Cal-Expo was a pace for mares meeting certain income conditions and $25,000 claiming mares. Eight distaffers went to post in seven betting interests vying for a purse of $5,100.

Most of the wagering public didn’t believe Corky’s Baylor could win three in a row in this class, but she did and rewarded the faithful with $9.20 for a two buck win ticket.

Moonie Svendsen dropped her in seventh in the field just ahead of Dayahana. Ed Hensley put Millwood Dell N on the lead and midway down the backside Svendsen tipped Corky’s Baylor out and floated up the outside hoping for some cover. Robley Johnson obliged with favorite Armbro Beachbaby and those two came out of third and gave Corky’s Baylor a second over trip around the far turn.

Svendsen pulled her off the cover she had enjoyed around the turn at the top of the stretch and she easily got to the front. Rick Plano had followed Corky’s Baylor all the way with Dayahana and she was now in the mix. Millwood Dell started to labor with an eighth left to pace and Magna Kay came up the pylons and bested Dayahana in a duel for second.

Corky’s Baylor crossed in 1:55 flat an easy winner by one and a quarter lengths. Rick Goolie and Jill Wine own her and Tom Wine trains. She is by Baler, out of the Oil Strike dam Corky’s Strike. This was her fifth win in seven starts this year.
