Oldest active racehorses to compete on Wednesday

Pompano Beach, FL —Two of the oldest active racehorses in the sport will go head to head on Wednesday at Pompano Park Harness Track.

Tarport Mark and Ostello, both ages 15, headline the third race trot, a division of the Florida Amateur Driving Club Series.

All racehorses face mandatory retirement when they turn age 15, with the only exception being if they are competing in Amateur Driver events. After turning age 15 they must also be checked by a veterinarian before being allowed to compete.

Tarport Mark is the 7-2 second choice in the race and so far in 2004 has an impressive five wins in 11 starts for driver Dein Spriggs. Owned by his wife, Joyce Spriggs of Jupiter, Florida and trained by Luanna Beeson, Tarport Mark has not finished out of the money in his last nine starts. The gelded son of Arndon is a career winner of $258,000.

While Ostello (post eight) has also had an illustrious career, bankrolling $238,000 over the years, he is a 12-1 long shot Wednesday and winless this season in 13 starts. He is owned and trained by Sergio Corona of Galt, California and will be driven by Gary Barbere.
