Filly and Mare Pacers head Freehold slate

Freehold, NJ — A very competitive field of eight has been assembled for Friday’s featured $14,200 Open handicap for filly and mare pacers at Freehold Raceway.

At 3-1, the morning line favorite is Darby’s Edge Stable, Joseph DiScala and Ed Mullinax’s Nells Bells. In last week’s edition of this race, the four-year-old daughter of Dragon’s Lair was a beaten 13-10 choice when she waged a long first-over battle that fell short to Time Flies N in that rival’s 1:553 victory. Nells Bells has beaten Open mares at Freehold as recently as January 23, and a smooth journey on Friday could be all that is needed to get her back on the winning track.

Nells Bells has been assigned post seven on the handicap. She will be guided by George Brennan for trainer Virgil Morgan, Jr.

Ready to supply the top choice with serious opposition is Time Flies N. The five-year-old In The Pocket mare has won 18 races over the past two seasons — including several against Open competition — and will be the one to beat with her usual solid performance.

Stephane Bouchard, who was in the sulky for Time Flies N’s win last week, has been given the return assignment by trainer owner/trainer Joseph Muscara. The duo will leave the gate from the outside post eight.

Rounding out the field for the main event are Elgigi A, Awesome Gal, Angela Gold, Alanis M, Rights Tulip and Figure The Odds.

First post for Friday’s 12 race card at Freehold has been set for 12:30 p.m.
