Goldberg records huge win; seasonal awards presented at Dover

Dover, DE — Closing night at Dover Downs on Thursday (April 4) displayed a spectacular card of 16 races highlighted by the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders final (DSBF) for pacing colts, a $33,000 Open Pace and a $34,000 Open Trot.

Race 10 was the DSBF colt final and it was all Goldberg (Mr Wiggles-Chausettes Blanche) in his fourth start of the year in 1:51.2 in wire-to-wire fashion for breeder/owner/driver Montrell Teague.

Goldberg is trained by Teague’s aunt, Brenda Teague. This was a sweet victory as the colt had a near death illness after qualifying for the Metro Pace final as a 2-year old. The win brought his season earnings to $66,620.

Joe Columbo, for the powerful George and Tina Dennis Racing Stable,, was honored as leading trainer at this meet. He sent out 61 winners with earnings of over $750,000. Almost all of those winners were driven by Mike Cole.

The driving title went to Tim Tetrick, who needs no introduction, as he had over a hundred more wins than the closest competitor. Maintaining a UDR for the meet of over .400 and bagging 222 wins with earnings in excess of $2.5 million he has amassed lifetime earnings of over $204 million.

Delishka N (Bettor’s Delight-Balishka)had seven wins and earnings over $100,000 for owners, Legacy Racing of DE,Inc, Nanticoke Racing Inc, Reginald A Hazzard, II, and Gary P Callaway. She was honored as the leading horse of the meet and trained by Wayne Givens.

The $33,000 Open Pace was won by Keep On Rocking A (Rocknroll Hanover-Golden Flyin) in 1:49.4 for trainer/owner, Chris Scicluna and driver Pat Berry.

The $34,000 Open Trot went to All Champy (Explosive Matter-Avista Hanover) in a new lifetime record of 1:52.1 for trainer “Porky” Wyatt and driver, Ross Wolfenden. He is owned by Howard and Joshua Kaufman.

The meet’s award winners were interviewed throughout the evening by harness racing personality Heather Vitale.

Racing will return to Dover Downs in November.
