Ab’s Beach Boy battles for a ‘Battle’ spot

by Keith Gisser, assistant publicity director, Northfield Park

Northfield, OH — Brett Miller steered Ambalel Patel’s Ab’s Beach Boy to his second straight $10,000 Invitational win at Northfield Park on Saturday, March 31, posting a 1:52 mile — fastest of the year over the Flying Turns.

With the Battle of Lake Erie just three weeks away, the 4-year-old son of Jenna’s Beach Boy, who had been campaigning at the Medowlands against the likes of Mr Big and Fox Valley Appeal, is gunning for a spot in the track’s biggest annual event.

Sent off at 1-2, Miller put Ab’s Beach Boy on the front and he was never headed. Lamar Moody trains the career winner of $179,795. Ataboyart was second, three lengths back.

The win was one of five on the card for Miller.

Nells Bells takes second straight Mares Open

Sylvia Burke, King of the World Stable, John Chiovetta and W.W. Haas’s Nells Bells made another of her patented late rallies to win Friday’s (March 30) $7,500 Mares Open Handicap, measuring leader Look To Book and going by in the stretch.

Matt Kakaley steered the 7-year-old Dragon’s Lair mare to her second straight victory locally. Mickey Burke trains Nells Bells, who pushed her career earnings over $314,000.
