‘Alice’ springs to eighth straight at Pompano

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Ciara Stable and Michael Polansky’s Alice Springs stretched her unbeaten streak to eight at Pompano Park on Friday when capturing a $5,305 leg of the Sunshine State Stakes for 2-year-old filly pacers in 1:57.1.

ALICE SPRINGS, driven by Wally Hennessey, remains unbeaten on Friday when winning for the eighth straight time at Pompano Park, taking a $5,305 leg of the Sunshine State Stakes in 1:57.1.

Driven from post four by Wally Hennessey, Alice Springs cruised through an opening quarter mile in :28.4, briefly yielding the lead to Howard’s Baby (Bruce Ranger) before quickly reclaiming the top spot to cut out middle fractions of :58.2 and 1:28.3.

Alice Springs entered the stretch with a comfortable two-length advantage, and the daughter of first-crop sire N Aboriginal was never threatened down the lane, coasting home effortlessly to prevail in 1:57.1. Howard’s Baby crossed the wire second while Just Be Original (Stephan Lareau) finished third.

Trained by Tom Harmer, Alice Springs has rolled through the first eight starts of her career without a defeat, amassing a career bankroll that now exceeds the $44,000 mark.

The 3-year-old pacing filly Lucy Lucy extended her winning streak to three on Friday, taking her $5,144 Sunshine State Stakes division in 1:56.4 for trainer Kim Sears, who co-owns the daughter of Tough Sir with Jay Sears.

Bruce Ranger provided the winning drive behind Lucy Lucy, who has visited the winner’s circle three times this year and owns a lifetime record of nine wins from 19 starts with over $55,000 in her career bankroll. Miss Top Flight (Hennessey) and Sunshine Cindy (Brad Hanners) rounded out the top three.

Rod Lorenzo, Ciro Gentile, Al Solomon, and Gerrie Tucker’s Leavembehind tallied her fourth triumph of the season taking the second $5,219 Sunshine State Stakes division for sophomore filly pacers in 1:55.

The daughter of Mean Mr Mustard is trained by Michile Lorenzo and was driven to her 10th career victory from 20 starts by Hennessey. Flutterbutt (Kevin Wallis) crossed the wire second, while Windswept Star (Daryl Bier) was third.

Little Wendy notched her first career victory on Friday when pulling a 37-1 upset in the $9,283 Sunshine State Stakes event for 3-year-old female trotters, the lone stakes event held on the 11-race pari-mutuel program.

Owned by Rodney Chadwic Davis II, and trained by Robert Schell, Little Wendy was driven to her six-length triumph by Mickey McNichol, stopping the timer in 1:59.3. Famous Lady (Hennessey) was second while Sweet Melissa (Wallis) finished third.
