Anderberg pays to play in World Trotting Derby

Du Quoin, IL — One of two $30,000 supplemental entries in the World Trotting Derby, Anderberg is one of four sons of Andover Hall that will compete in the race.

He was the winner of a division of the Arden Downs Stake at The Meadows in western Pennsylvania in 1:56.4 in early August, but it was a race in late June that helped convince owner John Green to supplement the colt.

“He was second to Donato Hanover in the Historic at the Meadowlands (on June 29) and it was very close (one length),” said owner John Green. “He seems to be consistent with a late closing horse. But after that race, he got ill with a flu and that prevented him from racing, but he’s rebounded from that and he seems to be back on the right road.”

Anderberg was trained by Jimmy Takter last year, but changed hands when Green bought him at the Harrisburg Sale in November for $28,000.

“It was predominantly based on the breeding; as an Andover Hall, he seemed like a good prospect for the sophomore season. He was originally trained by Mike Palone, who also trains my horses, and now Buzzy (Sholty), who trains Anderberg, trains for me as well.”

Green owns Anderberg with his daughters Emily, 14, and Rachel, 11. Outside of racing, he is CEO of Alliance Continental Holdings, which specializes in commercial financing for the airline industry. Green and his daughters have both been involved in show jumping and he also owns Thoroughbreds, about 20, as well as about 20 Standardbreds.
