Appleoosa Hanover ready for ‘Crown’ elims

by Jeff Renton, media/communications, the Woodbine Entertainment Group

TORONTO – According to Carl Jamieson, Shes A Great Lady victor Appleoosa Hanover (Western Hanover) will be ready to roll Friday evening at Woodbine when she gets behind the starting gate for her C$28,462 Breeders Crown elimination for two-year-old pacing fillies (Race 9, 10:20 p.m.).

Since her tally in the C$754,500 Shes A Great Lady, the Western Hanover filly has been a vet’s scratch (sick) out of a Champlain division (September 8), and has finished third, beaten 10¼ lengths, in a Woodbine overnight on October 12.

Without saying, Appleoosa Hanover’s current form doesn’t look stellar on paper, but Jamieson has said that the lines are deceiving.

Appleoosa Hanover won the C$754,500 Shes A Great Lady.

“[When she was scratched out of the Champlain] her temperature came up to about 104 [degrees Fahrenheit], but she didn’t get really sick – no mucous or anything,” said Jamieson, who co-owns Appleoosa Hanover with fellow Ontarians Joanne Morrison and Thomas Kyron. “After the Champlain, we were trying to get her a little rest before the Breeders Crown. There’s no sense racing a two-year-old stakes horse in a bunch of overnight races if you don’t have to.”

Forty days after her Shes A Great Lady tally, Appleoosa Hanover raced in the aforementioned C$17,000 overnight at Woodbine.

“She needed a race and she had a flat tire in the mile,” Jamieson said about the $397,286 earner, who in nine starts has notched four wins, two seconds and two thirds. “The tire blew at the quarter pole. She still went the mile in [1]:55.4 and we were happy with the way she raced.”

Appleoosa Hanover will line up with seven foes in the second of Friday’s two elims, and she will have to be on her game, as the split definitely looks to be the tougher of the two.

Amongst others, Jamieson’s charge will be in against speedsters Cabana Fever (Real Desire) and Southwind Rio (Artsplace), who have both taken marks in 1:51.4.

Prior to Appleoosa Hanover’s tilt, Jamieson will be sending both Checkouttheview (Real Artist) and Whycantiforgetyou (The Panderosa) out in the first elim for two-year-old pacing fillies, carded as race seven (9:40 p.m.)

While the pair currently does not possess the high profile of an Appleoosa Hanover, Jamieson believes they have the tools to get the job done.

“They can both leave and get position, which helps a lot at Woodbine.”

The top five finishers from each elimination will gain entrance to the $600,000 (U.S., estimated) final (to be raced October 28), and the connections of elim winners will be able to select their post positions.
