• Macomber hopes Carol’s Z Tam makes big show

    If Carol’s Z Tam’s performance at Dayton three weeks ago was something of an audition, her appearance in Saturday’s (Oct. 20) Breeders Crown eliminations for older female pacers at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono could be considered her callback. Now she will look to land a spot in the big show. Carol’s Z Tam, trained by Jamie Macomber for owner Bill Matz’s Z Tam Stables, competes in the first of two $25,000 Breeders Crown eliminations for the pacing mares at Pocono.

    “Now that the baseball season is over, I can concentrate a little more on my love of amateur racing,” said “Yankee Joe” Lee, the locker room manager for the New York Yankees, after he won a North American Amateur Drivers Association (NAADA) event Thursday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Monticello Raceway. Well maybe it was that concentration Lee was referring to that enabled him to earn another driving victory, when he and On The Podium won a Billings Trot Thursday night at Yonkers Raceway in 2:00.3.

    The front end was the place to be in the amateur races Thursday (Oct. 18) at Monticello Raceway, as Joe Lee and Alan Schwartz hustled their trotters to wire-to-wire victories in the fifth leg of the North American Amateur Driving Association (NAADA) Trotting Series over the Sullivan County half-mile oval.
