Bacon Hill Scott cruises at Monticello

by John Manzi, publicity director, Monticello Raceway

Monticello, NY — After tasting defeat in his first two Monticello Raceway starts, Bacon Hill Scott made amends when he turned the tables on six others and cruised to an easy three length triumph in the featured $9,200 Preferred Trot on Wednesday, January 9.

Claude Huckabone III drove the 6-year-old Sir Taurus gelding to victory in a 2:00.4 clocking.

In a race where no horse starting went off with odds greater than 9-1, Huckabone sent his trotter to the front end from post position three and took immediate command on the first turn.

From there the hobbled trotter rambled by the quarter pole in :29.1 and was comfortable on the lead throughout. With no challenges, Huckabone got Bacon Hill Scott by the half in 1:00.1 and they were a length ahead of Donnegal (Mike Forte) as they passed the three-quarters in 1:30.2.

In the final turn Bacon Hill Scott opened up three lengths on the field and cruised home an easy winner over a track rated ‘good.’ Donnegal held on for second place and last week’s winner in this class, Marina Grace (Jimmy Marohn), garnered the show dough.

It was the first seasonal triumph for Bacon Hill Scott, who amassed a $56,095 bankroll last year.

Sent off at odds of 3-1, the trotter paid $8.60 for win. He is owned by James Ray, John Alluto, Ben Velocci and John Esposito.

Huckabone also won the co-featured $8,000 winners over trot with longshot BW Everytime in a 2:02.1 clocking.

Sent off as the longest shot on the board with odds in excess of 34-1, BW Everytime got up in the final strides to collar US Stars N Stripes (Bruce Aldrich, Jr.).

The winner paid $71.00, $26.40 and $12.20 across the board. He is owned by Casey Miller.
