Big weekend of stakes racing on tap in Maine

by Jack Ginnetti

Marlborough, MA — Maine has its own version of what a super weekend is all about. It all unfolds Saturday and Sunday when more than $500,000 in purses will be distributed at Scarborough Downs in Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association (MSBOA) stake finals for 2- and 3-year-olds.

Billed as ‘Super Sire Stakes Weekend,’ post time for Maine’s richest harness racing purse events is 12:30 p.m. each day.

Saturday features four 2-year-old Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes with each carring purses in excess of $52,000. Four more such races will be contested on Sunday, with each purse worth more than $77,000.

Maine’s governor has proclaimed both days in honor of the harness racing spectactular and Rep. Donald Marean has been a major force behind the fulfillment of the sires stakes two-day event. T-shirts will be given out each day commemorating the event to the first 500 who enter the track.
